How often the "experts" are wrong. In 2004 Bush claimed a mandate for his administrations format for GOP politics as accepted by the nations majority of voters. As with all such elections peoples on both sides of the political isle saw President Bush as the lessor of evils.
The problem for the Bush administration wasn't the failure to pass Social Security reforms; it wasn't his was policy though that's what the mainstream media had you and talk radio thinking. The biggest single problem was that Bush was not a conservative on anything other than social issues. The immigration debate did however ice it for the GOP once they offered McCain despite the idea that Palin cost him votes.
Bush stabbed his party in the back with his push for amnesty and McCain's nomination proved the GOP had lost it's way. Talkradio pushed McCain into the role after their repackaging of former Massechusett Govenor Mitt Romney liberalisms as the reincarnation of Reagan flopped miserably. Which only underscores the limits of "conservative" media as only being relavent when it speaks in matters of truth.
The truth is the majority of GOP voters wanted a Reagan type strong leader whose message was clearly articulated by a person whose record was clear on the issues. The sad traggedy is that Romney has to live with his record despite his efforts to make his opposition out to be a gang of religious bigots. We found this in September of 2008 when we were introduced to Sarah Palin; she walks the talk and has an infectious message of true optumism.
Democrats didn't lose in 94' because of a contract with America as so many have credited to Newt Gingrich either. The Democrat failures are simply do to the false messages of Bill Clinton and the unmasking of the media. Sure Newt deserves alot of credit for drawing a road map to reform but the desire for reform was rooted in political unrest.
The country was not ready for a trully conservative president in 00' because surpluss budgets was causing a spend thirft mentality to surge. America is a nation of people and we it's people have a better standard of living than the rest of the world. However calling the government rich is a false reality because we have laws about how it collects revenue. In our current debt riddled economy most Americans are seeing the mistakes of excess social spending.
